Free Comic Book Round Up

I've been lucky enough to pick up a bunch of free comics, so here is a review round up.  I put up links if the comic is still free.

Captain Ginger #1 - this seems to be a riff on Cat from Red Dwarf.  It falls into that love it or hate it stage.  The artwork is cool, the story so-so.  (Cast is cats).

John Henry #1 - I enjoyed this so much I got the whole series.  It is a steampunk version of John Henry.  Polly makes an appearance, and there are the tradition war with machine ideas.  It was really good.  (Diverse cast naturally)

Crowded #1 - the comment on the gig work culture as well as being tied to a device are timely.  The idea of cancel culture has been adapted is good too.  I love the house.  Points as well for using a diverse cast.

Ice Cream Man #1 - This was strange but in a good way.  It is a nice work of horror as well.  It reminds me of the Twilight Zone in some ways.  (Diverse cast)

Huck #1 - this isn't bad, but it is not all that interesting either.  It seems to be a what if the people found out where a super hero lived.  The humor is good, but that is really the only thing that makes it stand out from other similar stories.

Flavor #1 -  this  a sweet type of story.  Nice world building.  It deals with a young chef who has to take care of the family business but her parents are ill.  She has a very interesting dog, and there is her uncle who seems to have a story to tell.  The art work is nice, the characters great.

Scooby-Doo Where are You #75 -  this installment finds the gang on the set of Daphne's favorite show, a version of Xena Warrior Princess.  It is great to see Daphne as the center and not being used simply as "Danger Prone Daphne".  The take off on Xena was great as well.

Scooby-Doo Team Up Vol 1 - these are largely Batman centric stories, and I am not a huge Batman fan.    It does include a good Wonder Woman story that includes Nubia.

Undiscovered Country #1 - the idea is sound, but for some reason it didn't grab me.  (Diverse cast)

Man-Eaters #1 - This is a love it or hate comic.  It is very feminist, though the effects of the virus do not seem to be totally thought out.  The beginning is quite funny.

Songs for the Dead - the first issue is feel.  I enjoyed that so much I brought the next three and the follow up series.  The plot concerns a Necromancer who wants to fight against what maybe her destiny and/or how society views magic.  It features women who are strong in different ways.  The follow up is The Necromancer's Map which adds some more characters.  (Diverse cast, LGTB+)

Being Super #1 -  I am not much of a Supergirl fan  but I might check out the rest of this series.  I like the friendship between the three girls.  (Diverse, LGTB+)

Captain America: Winter in America - I haven't read the whole Cap is Hydra storyline, and this is not the place to start.  Coates makes good use of referencing current politics, and Black Panther does make an appearance.  But I really didn't care.  I also wonder how come women age so much differently with magic times than men.  (Diverse cast)

Invincible #1 - I've read later comics in this series, and the series does get better.  Have to say though, the tailor was great.

Echoes - well written but predictable.

The wicked + Divine  - Interesting but the central character goes quiet for the later part of the issue.  The use of gods is great.  (Diverse cast)

Scooby-Doo #48 - the gang has to solve the mystery of ghostly Vikings.  Velma gets a starring role and the conclusion is clever.

Pretty Deadly #1 -  this was clue and make excellent use of western tropes.  (Diverse cast)

Flashpoint #1 - Flash's confusion was well done.

Little Bird #1 - this is deep.  Somewhat confusing but deep.  I will be picking others up in the series.  It is a bleak future where the last freedom fighters seem to be First Nations.

Jasmine's New Pet - this Disney graphic novels is about when Jasmine gets Raja.  It gives Jasmine more depth and is closer to the new live action movie than the cartoon.

Captain America #444 - read about how great Cap is and how much he taught the other Avengers.  Then get something to get the sugar off.

MCMLXXV  -  how a cabbie handles driving NYC while magic invades.  This is extremely cool and a great action read.  (Diverse Cast)

Lucy Claire  I read the first issue, which is still free and then brought the others.  This series makes excellent use of Japanese myth and werewolf lore.  The characters are great.  The artwork good.  Lucy Claire kicks ass but is relatable.  (Diverse Cast)
