Feb 2021 Reads

Fiction

Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk – The title short in this collection is engrossing and a great examination of a relationship.  The other stories are okay.

The Hearing Trumpet – Leonora Carrington’s novel is about a older woman and the strange retirement home she gets exiled to.

Crime

The Battered Body Beneath the Flagstones and Other Victorian Scandals – This collection of interesting crimes and stories from the Victorian era includes not only murderers, but lost children and bigamy.

Last Call -  This new book about a serial killer  of gay men places the victims front and center, as they should be.

Comics

Ironheart Vol 1 – This first collection of Ironheart issues is a great read.  It is also a must read for Star Trek: DS9  fans.

Godshaper #2, #3 – This series about people who can manipulate personal gods has picked up quite nicely.

Captain America: Winter Solider The Ultimate Collection – Agent 13 has far more to do in this book than she does in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Ending was a little bit of a let down.

LaGuardia – what if aliens wanted to immigrant to Earth – this series addresses that question and several others.

Stray Bullets #1 – meh

MCMLXXV #2 – I am really enjoying this series about a cab driver who tackles the supernatural.

Anti-Hero – This DC younger aimed comic is a fun read about two different, but not so different girls that become friends and teammates.  It was great fun.

Victor LaValle’s Destroyer – Modern interpretation of Frankenstein.  Someone, anyone, please get them to make a movie of this.

Obey Me #1 – interesting take on soul collection

Death of Love #1 – this comic seems to address the advent of “I am a nice guy and deserves girls” men.  Loved it.

Birthright #1 -  Interesting take on the savior from another dimension story

Copperhead #1 – Interesting take on westerns.

History

Bloody Brilliant Women – Cathy Newman’s book is about British women in the modern era who did things other than advocating for voting rights.  A nice read.

IN the Spirit of Crazy Horse – Detailed book about the various AIM trials.

The Voynich Manuscript – Charles River Editors’ overview of the mysterious document is well done.

Nonfiction

Sasquatch at Home – Eden Robinson’s lecture is well worth a read as she talks about the power of story.

Fantasy

Doppelgangster – The second volume in the Esther Diamond series involves mobsters and singing wait staff.

The Boatman’s Daughter – magical, Southern gothic.
