June 2021 Reads

Comics

Hollow Fields Vol 1 – this would be a great read for a child.

Beasts of Burden Occupied Territory #3 – another good installment.  But that ending.

FCBD The Dark Age – I might actually read this comic.  The daughter saves the dad and younger brother

FCBD Ghost Hog – Cute.  Kids should like it.

Ancient Astronauts – Nice artwork, bad plot

Artifice – slow start but the payoff is worth it.

Thorn Vol 1 -meh

History

Girl Squads – Sam Maggs’ short book about girls working together.  It is quite good and is very diverse.

100 Years of Spying – Short history of spying in the Western world

The Third Pole -  this account of climbing Everest is highly recommended.

Wayward Lives  by Hartman – this book about  Black women in 1900s NYC and Philly is highly recommend.  It is an excellent read.

Feminist

Sexual Justice – Interesting new book about examining how accusations of rape are dealt with in schools and colleges.

Fiction

All Quiet on the Western Front – reread of this rightful classic.

Winter in Bellapalma – supposedly comic novel that wasn’t very funny

Non-Fiction

Letters to a Young Poet – strangely an excellent book about faith

Brothers on Three – A look at an Native American basketball team’s season and the issues surrounding the members.

Castles of the World – Nicely illustrate photo book on castles.

How the Word is Passed – Just read this book about how the US remembers slavery.

Humor

The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of the Whole Stupid World – The stupid birds took the cherries and now they are eating my blackberries.

Fantasy

Misfortune Cookie – This Esther Diamond entry is a bit to obvious.

Abracadver – The seventh book in the Esther Diamond series is better than the sixth, though either have Lopez and Esther be a couple or not.  This on/off repetition is really trying.  She should date John.

Audio

The Cold Vanish  - a rambling book about people who go missing in National Parks.

The Celtic World – another good entry in the Great Courses.

Children’s

The Adventures of Mr. Macaw – This is dual language children’s book about a kite that gets sucked into a storm.

My First Book of Horses – This introduction to horses for young children makes good use of illustrations and photos.  The a day at a barn section is pretty good; however, there are factual errors in the section on the history of the horse.

Frozen Cook: Olaf the Carrot Nose Snowman – the recipes are cute but some of the choices for inclusion are strange.

Dressed in the Best (Fairytale Fraud #5) – Makes good use of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”

Troll Bridge (Fairy Tale Forest #4) – Different take on the troll under the bridge story.
