Art

The Faberge Menagerie - This is a lovely book about Faberge's work

Children's

The Caiman by Maria Eugenia Manrique - A sweet story about a man who adopts a caiman.  It is based on a true story.

Comics

Arale Vol 1 -Alternate history.  Makes good use of Baba Yaga, but some of the alternate history doesn't fully make sense.

Crime

A Rose for Her Grave and Other True Cases by Ann Rule - Rule's writing is very good.  If you like True Crime, this is worth reading.

Criticism

Still Mad by Susan Gruber and Sandra M. Gilbert - Great look at women's writing from the 1960s on up.

Essays

Mantel Pieces by Hilary Mantel - this is collection of essays and reviews that Mantel wrote for the London Review of Books.  It includes "Royal Bodies" which is worth a read.

Fiction

Peter the Great's African by Alexander Pushkin -the title story is quite good and semi-autobiographical considering Pushkin's grandfather.

Mystery/Thriller

Nightblind (Dark Iceland #2) by Ragnar Jonasson - I wasn't happy with the ending for one of the characters, but it was still a thrilling read.

Geezer Girls (Gangland Girls #1) by Dreda Say Mitchell - Thrilling if a bit longer than it has to be.  Would make a good tv series.

Blood Sister (Flesh and Blood #1) by Dreda Say Mitchell  - story of two sisters on a housing estate.  Promising state to a trilogy.

Vendetta by Dreda Say Mitchell - I love Rio in this mystery.  She is such a wonderful character.

Poetry

Gold by Rumi - recent translation of some of Rumi's poetry.

Travel

Smithsonian Guide to Historic America: Virginia and the Capital Region - published before the more recent additions to the National Mall (such as the North American Indian and African-American History and Culture museums), this is still a good guide.

Smithsonian Guide to Historic America: The Desert States - Nice if dated guidebook.
