Read Black Panther and want more comics with Black characters, check out the ones below.
Steampunk John Henry is an excellent retelling of John Henry. Polly's there too.
Octavia Butler's Kindred and Parable of the Sower are in graphic novel form. (You should also check out Toshi Reagon's opera based on Sower).
Rivers of London has also been adapted.
Neil Gaiman's American Gods is in comic form as well.
Nnedi Okorafor's short fiction as been adapted and there is her LaGaurdia.
There are graphic novels that relate the stories of Nat Turner, MLK, Clemente, Michael Jordon, and Muhammad Ali. Also check out the late John Lewis' March. There is also a graphic novel history of the Black Panther party.
Marcelo d'Salete's
Anogla Janga and
Run For It deal with the slave trade.
Aliens Resistance features a Black woman as a main character.
Bitter Root -about family out to save the world
Constance and Nano as well as The Geeky Fab Five are comics about girls of color and science.
The Danes -takes place in Denmark and the plot is about what happens when blonde white people give birth to black babies.
Dance Class series one of the lead dancers is a young Black woman.
Elfquest several characters in this long lasting series are elves of color.
Princeless about a princess who does not wait to be saved by a prince. (Also a spin off - Princess Raven, Pirate Princess)
The Family Trade - Civil War interrupts in a fantasy world.
Night Thrasher - this Marvel series from the 90s features the leader of the first (best) incarnation of the New Warriors.
Blacksad- okay this one is cheating because it uses cat people, but it is really about racism. I need Idris Elba to make a movie out of this series.
Rat Queens - D&D fantasy at its best.
If you think Eatha Kitt was the best Catwoman, there is Eartha Kitt Femme Fatale.
Pilot is about a woman named Destiny. It deals with issues that are covered in books like Ghettoside by Jill Leovy.
Divinity - basically a what if Superman were black and Russian.
Star Wars: Lando - I mean, its Lando.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur - she is the smartest being in the Marvel universe and she can't even vote yet. He is a dinosaur. A team they make.
Watson and Holmes - what if Holmes and Watson were Black and living in NYC. This is one the best take off of Holmes I have seen. It is far, far, far superior to Sherlock.
Rayven Choi - the central character is a young Korean/African American woman looking for answers.
The Forgottenn Slaves of Tromelin - This graphic novel tells the true story of slaves left on an island to die.
Niobe She is Death this fantasy series features a kick ass heroine.
Lucy Claire - read this series about a woman who kills supernaturally beasts as she tries (or tries not) to redeem herself. This is extremely well written.
Incognegro - this and the prequel, Incognegro Renaissance, address racism in the North and South. They are ver powerful but graphic.
MCMLXXV - about a not so average cab driver. I can see Queen Latifah doing this as movie.
Songs for the Dead - this fantasy series features a Black woman as a lead.
Goldie Vance - a young woman solves mysteries. Including ones that involve NASA.
Rebels Vol 1 - this one is cheating a bit too, considering that for two of the stories the main character is white. However, two of the supporting stories feature African-Americans choosing sides at the time of the American Revolution.
God Shaper - pretty much a story about a man who can shape gods.
Farmhand about a family whose farm doesn't grow the normal sort of plants.
Victor LaValle's Destroyer - modern day Frankenstein.
The Once and Future Queen - she is related to King Arthur.
Spell on Wheels - witches.
