Gods and Pharaohs
from Egyptian Mythology text by Geraldine Harris
Egyptians have powerful female gods, yet
don’t seem to think that women can do anything.
Hathor is given the task of taking revenge for RA, Iris is the Mistress
of Magic yet Semete dismisses his wife as being unable to help him.
Read the Nubian scroll.

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
I love the description of the Orland Family,
esp. “She had three sons before Catherine was born, and instead of dying in
bringing the latter into he world as anybody might expect, she still lived on –
lived on to have six children more – to see them growing up around her and to
enjoy excellent health herself” (9).
I do not think that Austen is
making fun of Catherine, I think she is trying to mock gothic noels and to do
this she makes Catherine normal and simple.
Part of Catherine’s problems come from the fact that she is used to a
simple life, she lacks the cynicism of someone born in the big city. She lacks life ‘s education. What she knows from life, she gets from
books. In essence, she tries to do what
is right and good. She is a good and kind
girl, desirous to think well of
everyone. Therefore, it is not surprising
that Henry marries her. Catherine’s only
flaw is that her imagination can run away with her.

X-Men by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith
[Note- novelization of the first X-Men movie.]
Some
difference from the movie. Focuses more
on Wolverine. Wolverine is more like the
comic book character than in the movie.
Older too. Like the fat that they
left in the dick line. Also the little
touches regarding Scott and Storm. At
least in the book Jean does try to free Scott and Storm from the metal, but
then she didn’t stop Toad.

Renunciates of Darkover ed. By Marion Zimmer
Bradley
[Note – read before I knew about Bradley and the
abuse. This is a short story collection].
Stories
seem too predictable. Too repetitive. Can call the plots and endings of most of
them. Though it was mice to read one
where the man wasn’t an asshole.

The Carpet People by Terry Pratchett
Truth
in comedy: “It’s what most people themselves to begin with and then one day the
tribe meets some other people and gives them like The Other People or if it’s
not been a good day, The Enemy. If only
they’d think up a name like Some More True Human Beings, it’d save a lot of
trouble later one.” (9)
In
comparing the way women fight to the way men do, “The women fought nastier”
(180).
Not so
much about growing up but about learning to live in ana environment and being
effected by those around you.
Not his
best written work because of the shift in focus from Snibab the prince and back
again.
