Jan 2021 Reads

Memoirs

The Copenhagen Trilogy – wow just wow.  About life, writing, and drug addiction.

Mysteries

Gallows Court -  the first installment in a new series features a woman who seeks justice and has cunning.  Strange considering large parts of the book are told from a male pov.

Screenplay

I am Not Your Negro – This is the screenplay for the movie of the same name.  It also includes details about how the movie came to be.

William Shakespeare’s Tragedy of the Sith’s Revenge – why aren’t you reading these?

Children’s

Golden Girls of Rio – This is about the female athletes (US only) at the Rio Olympics.  Nicely done.

Mae Jemison – Nice biography.

Yuka’s Way Home – Nice little story about a reindeer.  Looks at how different cultures view them as well.

Mary Had A Little Lizard – She did.  And it wasn’t because she mistook for a lamb.  Lovely book.

Hidden Figures – this children’s version is excellent.

Fiction

Later Novels – James Baldwin should be taught in school, not Hemingway.

Crime

Cosa Nostra – The Charles River Editors brief history is detailed but dry.

Comics

Coyotes #1 – Interesting take on werewolves and other things.

Chew #1 – This was strange

Faith and the Future Force #1 – Dr Who jokes don’t make up for the over used dying until we get it right plot idea.

Thief of Thieves #1 – It is a different take on the thief wanting to go straight idea.

Faith: Dreamside #1 -  Good use of characters and humor

Scooby-Doo #40, #43, #46

Scooby Doo, Where are You #41, #43, #44, #47, #49

Audio

Plantagenet – This BBC series of radio plays takes interesting lesser known, historical events.

History

Racism in America – This collection of experts from longer works is still free on Amazon. Nicely selected.

Fantasy/Sci -Fi

How Long til Black Future Month – Good collection of short stories, some involving food.

Disappearing Nightly – the first Esther Diamond series is quite fun and has fun with the virgin sacrifice idea.

The Truth about Stories – Thomas King’s CBC Massey Lectures about stories and Indigenous voices is a good, thought provoking read.

Mediocre  - Ijemoa Oluo’s book looks the dangers of the white man standard.
