April 2021- Round Up

Comics

First Knife #1 -  Don’t really like the artwork, but the use of the Meso-America setting is cool.

Priya’s Mask – India’s woman hero faces the pandemic and people who stupidly refuse to wear a mask.

Priya and the Wolves -  This installment makes good use of Red Riding Hooda s well as the Covid 19 pandemic.

Falcon Take Flight – the weak points of this collected editions are the supernatural elements.

Captain America: Sam Wilson Vol 1 – Apparently Misty Knight dresses in lingerie to fight Hydra.  So I stopped reading.

Beasts of Burden Occupied Territory – a good start to another story featuring everyone’s favorite magical drugs.

MCMLXXV #3 – Sad to say this looks  like the end to the series about a taxi driver fighting the forces of evil

Jim Henson’s Storyteller Sirens 1-4 – Those four issues retell stories about mermaids and sirens.  Well done and illustrated.  The fourth issue is a tad darker than the normal.

Jim Henson’s Storyteller Ghosts 1-4 – These are darker tales but still up to the Storyteller standard.

Fatale #1 – I don’t usually go for Noir, but this was good.

Exosisters #1 – Nice little comics about two maybe sisters.

The Banks – Roxanne Gay’s story of three generations of women pulling off a heist suffers from a weak plot and weak art.

Sea of Thieves #1 Champion of Souls -  Freebie comic origin story about a pirate

Cookbook

Kitchens of Middle Earth – Recipes adapted with a Tolkien twist.  Not too bad.

History

A Black Woman’s History of the United States – a good history, well worth reading.

Audio Books

Curse of Oak Island – This history of the famous island in Canada.  Compelling.

Fiction

Tarka the  Otter – this novel about an otter is a more realistic Bambi.  You have been warned.

Poetry

The Hill We Climb – Gorman’s poem from Biden’s inauguration

Remember Body  - The Little Black Classics Penguin edition of Cavafy is excellent.

Historical Fiction

The Twice Born – The first volume in Pauline Gedge’s King’s Man series.  Good historical fiction set in ancient Egypt.  Read Gedge now.

The House of Dreams – This book covers the Harem Conspiracy in ancient Egypt and as good

Mystery

The Maidens – Too much info dumping ruins what could have been a good mystery.

Memoirs

Diary of Samuel Pepys Vol 1 – excellent and readable historical documents.  He knows someone named Dr. Whores.

Fantasy and Science Fiction

Warlock Holmes and the Finality Problem – C S Denning’s Warlock Holmes series is an excellent and wonderful mash up of Sherlock Holmes and fantasy.  Garston’s narration is bloody brilliant.

From A Certain Point of View: Empire Strikes Back – this follow up to the Star Wars collection is not as good as the first volume, but still a worthwhile read.

Folklore and Fairy Tales

Swedish Fairy Tales  by Herman Hofberg – This old collection is quite interesting.  My edition is the 1896 edition and has those wonderful illustrations

Stories from Canada by Dulch – this is part of the Dulch reader’s collection.  For a book published in the 60s it has a large amount of First People’s stories as well as seem to try to get the tradition clothes correct.

Canada’s Haunted Coast by Vernon Oickle – This collection of ghost folklore from the Maritimes includes a chapter on Oak Island

Hauntings of the Hudson River Valley – this little book is a case history of famous hauntings in the Hudson Valley.

Travel

Educational Guide to Walt Disney World – while this kindle book was a bit outdated, it does include several good resources.
