(Fantasy Comic Books will be included in an upcoming comic
list)
River of Teeth (series) by Sarah Gailey. This series, which is a western where people
ride Hippos, centers on the relationship between Houndstooth and Hero. The novellas are quick reads and, additionally
to the center male couple, feature kick ass women.
Moonim Series by Tove Janson – while at first blush
these children’s aren’t necessarily LGBTQIA+ outside of the author’s own life,
there are references to characters that stand for the author and her
lover(s). But more importantly, the
books teach acceptance. There is a Hemulen
who wears his aunt’s dress, after all.
Lady Hotspur by Tessa Gratton - A fantasy reimagining of the War of the Roses
(Shakespeare’s version) with female characters instead of male.
The Deep By
Rivers Solomon – Solomon’s use mermaid legend is worked into issues of colonization
and climate change, and is also a love. Their
book was one my top reads for 2019.
The Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone – Gladstone’s
sequence of novels, set in a post war ravaged world where the gods walk,
features minority and LGTBQIA+ characters.
The Janet Watson Chronicles by Claire O’Dell – this series is Sherlock
inspired. However, it features two black
women as Sherlock and Watson, and takes place in a future Washington DC.
My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran. This Choose Your Own Adventure could be filed
under several different genres. It is a
CYOA romance novel where the outcomes range from the various endings and including various pairings,
not just male/female. There are several
endings where the women end up together.
The Vicki Nelson Series and Smoke Trilogy by Tanya
Huff. These two series feature the
character of Henry Fitzroy, a bisexual vampire.
The first series details his relationship with Vicki Nelson (the main
character), the second series features his relationship Tony. Her other books feature LGBTQIA+ characters
as well.
Tremontaine ed. By Ellen Kushner, but various authors.
– This serial book series (up to season 4) features a wide variety of characters. It is a fantasy novel of revenge, plots, manners,
and love.
Swordspoint Novels by Ellen Kushner – Swordspoint and the novels
set in the same universe are wonderfully quiet but beautifully written fantasy.
Kushiel Universe Series by Jaqueline Carey- this nine book series features a host of characters
exploring an alternate history Europe/Asia.
The first six books feature characters who enjoy S&M. The last three do not. All nine feature main characters who are bisexual. The writing at times can be flowery, but
Carey is one of the few authors who really address the difference between
desire, consent, and rape. Also check
out her Santa Olivia series- a lesbian lead
who is very much like Wolverine.
Myth and Magic: Queer Fary Tales ed by RadClyffe– Veronica Wilde’s “Heartless” is the best
retelling of the Snow Queen I have ever read in my life.
Ash by Maline
Lo - A lesbian Cinderella. Lo also writes for the Tremontaine series.
Cheshire Red Reports and Maplecroft by Cherie Priest –
The first is a vampire series, the second is a series about Lizzie Borden.
Imajica by Clive Barker. This massive book is just a wonderful
journey. (Many of Barker’s novels
feature characters who are LGBTQIA+.
There is even one character who is a woman who shares a body with a male
ghost in one series).
The Hound and the Falcon Series and Avaryan Rising by Judith Tarr – Tarr’s
Hound and the Falcon series is about a the Crusades with fantasy thrown
in. Avarayan is a fantasy land that
reminds one of the ancient Middle East.
The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flemming. An interest take on the chosen one trope.
