July 2021 Reads

Comics

FCBD Minecraft and Incredibles 2- The Incredibles story is the better of the two.

FCBD Afterburn Mayhem in Moscow – Not particularly grabbing.  Nice use of Faberge eggs though.

Beasts of Burden Occupied Territory #4  - Good conclusion to the series

I, Holmes – meh

FCBD Our Favorite Thing is Monsters- really good memoir edition here.

Doom Patrol Vol 1 (2016) – where’s Rita?

Paying the Land – Highly recommended graphic novel about the Dene people in Canada.

Stumptown -Read this after enjoyed the tv show.  Really fun.

Marzi Vol 1 – first in a series about a girl growing up in Poland during the Communist era.  Memoir.

Aquaman Vol 2 Black Manta Rising – I love how Aquaman respects women.  Really a diverse cast too.

Children’s

Homer for the Holidays, Letter to a Young Pug by Nancy Levine – cute little books about Pugs and the Tao.

The Tao of Pug – cute.

Rory: An Orca’s Quest for the Northern Lights – a bit too cute, but nice fact sheet at the end of the book.

Song of the Redwing -  The illustrations for this book are beautiful.

Okapi Loves His Zebra Pants  - Cute.  I don’t see many books featuring an Okapi.  This made a nice change.

Maximus the Platypus Finds His Family – bonus points for using grandparents instead of parents.

Yara and Purr – another good installment in the children’s series.

Nonfiction

Lions of Big Cat Rescue by Carole Bashkin – published in 2007, so some of the animals are gone, but still a good read if you like big cats.

Lifted from the Trash Heaps by Samuel Colman – family history

Revenge of the Real: Politics for the Post Pandemic World -  a little dated, very general statements

Love People Not Things – some important ideas get loss in privilege and overburdened writing

Silk and Steel – History of women and firearms.

The Splendid and the Vile – Yup, it was as good as people said.

Abused, Confused, Misused Words – good book for a writer or a student.

Feminist

Tomorrow Sex  Will Be Good Again  - interesting discussion about sex, pleasure, and consent.

Folklore

Ghosts of Alexandria -  packed full of history.

Cookbooks

Harry Potter Cocktail Book, Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, A Feast for Odin – I read these so you don’t have to.

The Witcher Recipes: Wild Hunt in Your Kitchen -  the recipes are chosen pretty well.

A Special Disney Princess Cookbook – Good and varied in terms of recipes.

Delicious Great Gatsby Recipes – Not sure if the author of this read the Great Gatsby, to be honest.

The Crown: Recipes for British Royalty –  Not too bad

Best Game of Throne Authentic Recipes – to be fair, you can see this food as being in GoT

Drink Me, Eat: Alice in Wonderland Recipes – the writing is awful.

Audio

Understanding Imperial China – another excellent entry in the Great Course series.

Inspector Morse BBC Radio Dramas – well done, with cast.

Martin Beck Stories (BBC) – Nicely done.  Each mystery is an hour.

P. D. James Mysteries (BBC) -  includes audio of the author from interviews.

Fiction

Divorcing by Susan Taubes – very strange,  but something you should read.

Yearning for the Sea – this short novella about Penelope is very good.

The Tusk that Did the Damage – the writing is great, but I found it different to care about any of the characters

The Wandering Unicorn – well written but falls into that one only good woman trap.

Family Lexicon – part memoir, part fiction, good introduction to Italian fiction.

Deception’s Princess – first in duology about Queen Maeb when she was young.  Nicely done.

Art

Weird Homes: The People and Places that keep Austin Strangely Wonderful – Nicely illustrated.
