Reads and Bullet Reviews for Jan 1-9

Children's

Robin Hound by Melody Pendlebury - this is a very nice Robin Hood riff.  I love the fact that the dog's owner is a woman of color.

 Comics/Graphic Novels

Cut - This Dark Horse comic by Mike Richardson is an excellent horror story.  It starts with a locked room mystery and moves briskly along.  Sometimes the art is a little wonky, but it is a really great horror story.

Dark Horse Heroes Omnibus: Vol 1. -  I read about half of this.  I discovered the Dark Horse character Ghost last year, and she is part of this story.  But in the first 270+ pages she is hardy in it, and with the possible exception of Barb Wire, the other characters are boring.

The Lone Ranger Vol 1, #1 - This is a pretty good adaption of the Lone Ranger story.

Hellboy in Hell #1 - I didn't like this one.

Dead Eyes #1 - It's not bad but very predictable and the woman are simply tropes.

Analog #1- I found the idea behind this comic interesting - everything about everyone is made public.

History

A History of the Tudors in 100 Objects by John Matusiak - Overall, this is a pretty good book for the Tudor fan.  Matusiak focuses more on the era as opposed to the Royal, so there are pretty objects that everyday people would use.  Sometimes, it is strange because a couple of items pictured are from museums outside of the United Kingdom so one wonders if that is because there such an item did not survive in the Uk.  Also the inclusion of Luther's betrothal ring was a bit off. While Luther is important, it would have made more sense to have a tract or a translation.  The ring makes it less a Tudor specific as opposed to Europe of that century.

Mystery

The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey - This was a re-read.  It holds up.  What I noticed this time as opposed to the first time that I read it is Tey's comments about other mysteries at the time of her work.  DoT, if you do not know, is a book where a sick Inspector looks into the question of who killed the Princes in the Tower.
