Weekly Reads April 25- May 14

Art

Guston in Time by Ross Feld - I might have enjoyed this morning if I had actually known who Guston was before reading (NYRB Book of the Month)

Comics

Enter the House of Slaughter FCBD- interesting tie in.

 History

The Salton Sea by Charles River Editors -  a bit good short history.

Beavers and Plumes  by Charles River Editors -this focuses on the use of beaver fur and plumes in fashion.  There is detail about the fur industry as well as how the items were used in fashion.

Sedona: Beautiful Woman, Beautiful Woman  by Julie McDonald - very general biography of the woman that Sedona is named for.  Short but not bad.

The Order of Assassins by Charles River Editors - this is a really good short history.

The Queens of England by Barbara Blake - it isn't that Blake is wrong, its just that her word choices are really off.

Fantasy

Moon Witch Spider King (The Dark Star Trilogy 2) by Marlon James - the second book retells parts of the first book in the series from a different point of view.   I enjoyed it better than the first installment, though it is not as consuming as A Brief History of Seven Killings.

The Many Daughters of Afong May by Jamie Ford - Seriously good.

Folklore/Myth

African Mythology and Folklore by Charles River Editors - this a pretty good overview/introduction.

Tezcatilpoca by Charles River Editors - A bit too repetitive.

The Underworld in Ancient MesoAmerica by Charles River Editors - This was extremely well done.

Mystery

The Likness (Dublin Murder Squad 2) by Tana French - French can write; she makes you want to continue with the story despite the unlikability of everyone involved and the rather stupid idea.

Lady Joker Vol 1 by Kaoru Takamura - slow, but if you can deal with that, this first part is riveting.

Broken by Karin Fossum - interesting mystery that is really about the writing process.

Nature

The Deep by Alex Rogers - this is more of memoir about protecting the oceans than about the creatures in the ocean, but Rogers is a good writer.

Poetry

Two Brown Dots by Danni Quintos -  an excellent collection of poetry.
