Children's

Sable Island: The Wandering Sandbar by Wendy Kitts -  Sable Island is known for its horses, but Kitts focuses also on the history of the island  and other wildlife.  She does not sugarcoat the more darker aspect of nature.

Comics

Stray Dogs  - This collected comic mini-series is about dogs who slowly realize what is up with thier caretaker.  It is a dark story, so despite the style of illustration, not for younger children.

Star Wars (2013-2014) Vol 2: Ruins of Alderaan - I got this by accident because I thought it was Vol 2 of another Star Wars series.  Anyway, this was actually quite good.  Leia is very active in it  - she flies an X-Wing.  This was quite fun.

Mulo (Brittany Drizzle) - This graphic novel is very noir, even though all the characters are animals.  Think Blacksad.

Whispers in the Walls Vol 1-3 -This graphic novel series is set shortly after or during WWII and details a war between monsters and druids.  Predictable but a fun read.

Inkblot Vol 1 - This graphic novel has good representation but it takes far too long for anything remotely like a plot to pop up.  The cat is cute though.

Sea of Thieves Origins #1 and #3, Sea of Thieves Champion of Souls #2 -  These pirate comics are nice enough read.

Rose Vol 3 -  A good ending to the series, even if Rose seems too passive in this one.

Overwatch Tracer: London Calling 3-5, Overwatch New Blood #1-5 - The Overwatch comics do have a nice diverse cast.

FCBD Captain Harlock -  I found this okay.

Battlepug the Compugium and The War on Christmas Vol 1 - These are so funny.

Many Worlds of Krypton - Okay, if you like Superman.  Very 60s feel.

Tales from Harrow County: Fair Folk 2-4 - Really good use of fairy lore in this collection.

Fiction

The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai - This Booker Prize winning novel is about the effects of colonialism.

The Flanders Road by Claude Simon - NYRB Classic Book Club selection.  The book is beautifully written and is about WWI.  The style, however, will not be for every one's taste.

The Novel of Ferrrara by Giorgio Bassani- This is actually a one volume collection.  Bassani's collection details life in an Italian town before and after WWII.

My Evil Mother by Maragret Atwood - Atwood blends witch lore with mother and daughter relationships.

Folklore Collections

The Hunter Maiden: Feminist Folktales from Around the World by Ethel Johnson Phelps - This is a nice a diverse collection, though in a couple of the stories the woman is secondary to the male hero.

Mystery

The Early Cases of Hercul Poirot by Agatha Christie - a collection of short stories.  I enjoyed the ones where Poirot doesn't technically win.

The Heron's Cry  (Two Rivers #2) by Ann Cleves - This is the second Matthew Venn outing.  Some of the characters from the first book pop up.  The focus here is on a artists' commune and the effects of mental illness.  Jen still rocks.  I love her so much.

Non Fiction

Secret History of Kate Bush by some dude who has stalker  leanings -this was strange, but with very lovely photos.

Atlas Obscura - A travel guide to strange places.  Canada seems to be underrepresented though.

Bad Gays by Huw Lemmy - mostly male, and mostly European.  Still a good read with a couple less known Gays from history included.  Though "bad" seems to have multiple definitions here.
